This vividly coloured roll was an item on Tenon's Chef's Specials menu.
This is the Vegetarian Fish; one of my favourite appetizers and a must-order each time I go.
The Crispy Avocado roll is definitely my favourite items on the buffet menu; this sushi roll is nonpareil.
Towards the end of August, my family and I went to one of our favourite restaurants, Tenon Vegetarian Cuisine, for a little trip to Japan before vacation ended. Tenon is located in Markham, Ontario, situated at the corner of the Peachtree Centre, a popular Asian shopping destination. Before going to this restaurant, our family didn't frequent the area, but since Tenon's opening, we've found ourselves returning over and again. The food is scrumptious, the restaurant atmospheric and the staff alacritous, all at a surprisingly economical price.
Tenon offers a wide variety of Japanese delicacies; from traditional miso soup to colourful shashimi platters; all for guilt-free indulgence because everything on the menu is wholly vegetarian (and therefore, healthy, kind and environmentally friendly). You can peruse their dine-in menu here and take-out menu here, but it will take all the restraint you can muster not to salivate. Also, if you are feeling hungry on the day you go, I suggest you go for the buffet, which I guarantee will satiate any ravenous monster you have growling inside you.
One of the greatest things about Tenon is the variety they offer, catering to the needs of even the most fastidious eaters. You can watch the sushi chef prepare the rolls, so you can make special requests for your orders if you wanted. Additionally, Tenon's menu is so eclectic that there is something fit for anyone who goes there. For the adventurous, inquisitive sushi diner, there are a plethora of imitation meat rolls offered, including vegan tuna, crab, shrimp and squid. If you're the more tentative eater, you'll find great pleasure in their California, cucumber and avocado rolls (like the ones shown above). If you're not an avid sushi fan at all, there are a good number of enticing and aromatic Japanese and Thai dishes offered (one of my favourites is the Thai-style fried rice, A8 on the menu).
As a vegetarian, I've been to numerous veggie restaurants in the GTA and I know that places that offer decent sushi are an elusive rarity. Tenon has all you could ask for in Japanese cuisine in one place. Also, I've never met a restaurant owner more passionate about his job. Tenon's founder has an ardent love for sushi and promoting vegetarianism; a fervent energy that is very evident in his food. Even if you're not a vegetarian, I suggest you give this place a try; you won't regret it! Besides, it wasn't selected as one of PETA's Top Ten Restaurants for Vegetarian Sushi for nothing.
